London, Ont. – Springbank Dam North Embankment Crib
City of London
Riggs Engineering has been retained by the Upper Thames River Conservation Authority to study the drainage characteristics of the soil held by a concrete crib wall located in London, Ontario. As part of the investigation, Riggs Engineering performed global stability analyses of the valley slope located behind the concrete crib.
2D finite element modeling was used to study the global stability of the slope behind the crib. Seepage analysis was used to quantify the groundwater table in the soil mass, which was later determined to have a great influence on the computed factors of safety of the valley slope. The results of the finite element analysis produced failure surfaces that were in line with field observations.
Riggs Engineering provided a number of different alternatives for improving the characteristics of the soil behind the crib and completed a cost assessment of the remedial options provided.
